New Year, New Approach

It’s that time of year again when every radio station, dieting service and self-help mogul alike are promoting the “New Year New You” attitude. We want to encourage you in this season of change. TMAA offers a fresh perspective, and perhaps just the one missing ingredient you need to be successful in achieving your goals in 2019. We use a combination of methodologies to equip our students for success, but here are a few we have found to be universaly essential.

When students enter the the Dojo, often they have one big goal, such as earning their black belt, losing a certain amount of weight, teaching their kids (or themselves) self-discipline or confidence. This is where we introduce the S.M.A.R.T goal setting method. If you’re not familiar with this method it means each goal set should meet these criteria:

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Relevant

Time-Bound

More Information can be found on the definitions of these critera HERE.

Additionally, all students start off with a physical, and easily tangible goal. In reaching each physical benchmark students gain confidence and are often inspired to reach higher in their own indivualized goals. For example each new student is tasked with working towards 10 push ups and 10 sit ups in 2 minutes. For some that’s easy and for some it’s daunting, for almost all its attainable (in those circumstances, we modify). We put the time limit of 3 months or one quarter for the goal. When the student succeeds we build on it by saying the next quarters goal is 20 push ups and so on.

What sets ups apart is the culture we have created around goal setting. We actively encourage comradery and intentionally create a spirit of perseverance. Our hope and mission is to partner with our students. To walk alongside them in their journey, both at an instructor and a peer level.

“I will seek to praise the best in others, as I continue to perfect the best in myself. And if I stumble, I know, that everyday, in every way, I’m getting better and better and better.”

Recited at the end of every class, this call to action reminds each of us here at TMAA of our core conviction and edifies us in our journey.
